Good to know

The state programs of Baden-Württemberg are special exchange programs, because here the partnership is not between two universities, but between the state of Baden-Württemberg and a consortium of universities of a state (USA) or province (Canada). On each side of the state program, there is a coordinating office responsible for sending and receiving participating students.

Currently, the University of Hohenheim participates in the following state programs:

  • State program California (USA)
  • State program Connecticut (USA)
  • State program Massachusetts (USA)
  • State program North Carolina (USA)
  • State program Oregon (USA)
  • State program Ontario (Canada)

Who is eligible?

Participants...

  • are regularly enrolled in a degree program (Bachelor’s / Master’s) at the University of Hohenheim
  • have completed their first year in a Bachelor's degree program at the University of Hohenheim or at another recognized higher education institution
  • would like to study in the USA or Canada for one or two semesters
  • are pursuing their degree at the University of Hohenheim

Program benefits

  • Simplified application procedure at the partner university
  • Tuition waiver at the host university
  • Supervision and support during preparation by the University of Hohenheim and the German coordination offices of the state programs
  • Possibility of academic recognition of credits earned abroad
  • Opportunity to apply for a Baden-Württemberg scholarship

What does program participation involve?

Students receive a tuition-free study place for at least one to a maximum of two semesters at a partner university in the USA or Canada within the framework of a cooperation agreement of a state program of Baden-Württemberg.

Applying

Application procedure1. Send an application to the University of Hohenheim for up to three exchange places (three priorities) in the region “USA, Canada, and Israel.” One state program counts as one priority. Once a year, at least four weeks before the application deadline for the region “USA, Canada, Israel,” the exchange places are officially advertised via the AA-News on the University of Hohenheim intranet.

The contents of the respective announcement in the AA-News for the corresponding application procedure apply. Applications for exchange places are submitted exclusively via the online portal Mobility Online. The link to the application and further information can only be found in the corresponding announcement in the  AA-News.

2. After the application deadline, the selection committee selects the students and offers them a place at a partner university.

3. Once the student accepts the place at the partner university, then the program coordinator nominates the student at the office for that state program.

4. Stating the desired universities within the state program as part of an application to the state program.

5. Placement at a university within the state program by the coordination office of the state program.

6. Finally, the student sends an application to the partner university. The partner university makes the final decision on admission.

Since the available places will be distributed among all Baden-Württemberg applicants within a state program, it is especially important that you are flexible. If you cannot be assigned to one of your preferred universities, an attempt will be made to offer you a suitable place for your field of study at one of the other universities participating in the state program.

Selection and award criteriaStudents are selected by the committee responsible for the particular program. Following the selection, the candidates are nominated at the partner universities. The partner university makes the final decision on admission. Students are selected based on the applications submitted on time in Mobility Online.

The criteria for the selection are primarily the subject-area and academic aptitude as well as the personal motivation for the planned stay and the relevance to the subject area. Additional extracurricular volunteer work is also considered. Applicants are ranked according to the listed criteria as well as the requirements and conditions of the partner institutions, and the exchange places are then assigned according to the ranking list.
